What is Orofacial Myology?

Orofacial myology is the treatment of orofacial (mouth and face) muscles to assist with normal growth and development of the face and mouth. It can assist with speech problems, breastfeeding, sleep and breathing for adults and children. Orofacial myologist also work closely with dentist and ENT's, lactation consultants and speech pathologists. They can assist in the detection of tongue ties and can help with detecting some underlying reasons for oral habits such as prolonged thumb sucking.

One of the main aims of an orofacial myologist is to improve lip seal and tongue positioning to aid in correct nasal breathing. Prolonged mouth breathing is often associated with the following ;

  • Low energy

  • Tongue thrust pattern

  • Incorrect tongue rest

  • Narrow palate and jaw

  • Crooked teeth

  • Speech difficulties

  • Poor posture

  • Nasal congestion

  • Allergies

  • Asthma

  • Enlarged tonsils

  • Runny nose

  • Dry mouth

  • Bad breath

  • Snoring
